Hybridizing the Social Wrongs and Destruction of Nature

Many symbolisms and themes have stood out in the Caribbean texts discussed in class. Many common themes have even been connected between the different short stories and one of these themes is what I want to discuss in my prospectus. What I find interesting is the reoccurring use of nature and environment symbolism used in Caribbean literature. Therefore I will discuss this theme’s meaning in my eyes and as well as the interpretation from other readers. I will be using the text of Erzulie by Pauline Melville to support this reoccurring theme. An analysis of Pauline Melville’s Erzulie reveals a significant challenge that indigenous people faced, social righteousness. Melville’s story helps establish a new connection by exploring the social wrongs of the time and beauty of the Guyana country destroyed by colonialism. After researching Melville’s work in scholarly databases only a few articles on the topic were found. Other analysis of the story discussed th at there is an â€Å"emotional connection with the homeland† and how authors like Melville express this in their writing (Pyne-Timothy pg1). Also discussed in scholarly articles is the corruption in the society and that there is economic and political chaos (Pyne-Timothy pg1). After reading the few papers that have been published with reference to Melville’s work are great, but don’t use the symbolism of Erzulie to its full potential. They should refrain from involving into any sorts of corruption whether grand, petty or political. The company can have a framework that involves certain principles in to their business practices. The foremost is to consider human rights, practices that do not violate or abuses human right policies should be supported by the business. Second is to follow labor laws, i.e. especially elimination of discrimination and child labor, valuing diversity in the organization, and following the right practices with the people employed in the company. Next is to be considerate towards the environment, realizing the impact that the business has made on the environment, encouraging environmental friendly techniques and promoting sustainable development along with undertaking few responsibilities to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Most companies adopt either of the two approaches of corporate philanthropy. Apple Inc., US multinational company undertakes both the practices, the matching gift Program as well as the Volunteer Grant Program. The company matches the donations up to $10,000 in a year made to an organization by its full time employees. The Volunteer Grant Program undertaken allows the company to generously donate $25 for every hour that employee volunteers for the nonprofit organization (Apple Inc. Matching Gifts, 2016). Effectiveness of Corporate philanthropy initiatives is a matter of debate. Organizations feel that giving it back to the society is an obligation in the current business scenario, as it creates goodwill. One of the most prevalent practices of philanthropy is matching the donations made by the employees to an organization. This enhances the moral compass of an employee and also reflects their beliefs, values by leaving the choice of charity onto them. This somewhere reduces the burden of decision making of donation by the company. Scholars suggest that the chances of people making their own decisions in donating the money would be more appropriate than the company at large. However it is argued that strategic philanthropy does not come into the context when an employee is making his own choice. In strategically planned philanthropy there has to be some connections between the donations made and the business. When employees are making their own choice, there are very few chances that they align with the business and its long term goals. Companies should use the corporate philanthropy to get a competitive edge. In the long run, the goals of philanthropy and business should align in such a way that it creates more opportunities for the business while simultaneously creating a good impact in the society. Supporting the related industries is one such way that will help the business in increasing its productivity. The alignment of social benefit with economic benefit will generate pure business along with pure philanthropy. The social and economic value could be created by the company by selecting the best grantees, improving the performance of the grant recipients, and most importantly by advancing their knowledge (Porter and Kramer, 2002). Ethical practices refer to carefully consider the practices and policies regarding issues, such as promoter trading, bribery, discriminatory practices, and corporate social responsibility (Simpson and Taylor, 2013). Ethical behavior and social responsibility in business should go hand in hand. A business can gain trust of the society by performing social responsibilities ethically. Undertaking the responsibilities ethically would bring certain impact on the business, it would help the business in attracting more customers, thereby increasing profits when the sale increases. It would also increase employee retention, reducing the labor turnover and thereby reducing the cost of hiring and training the employees according to the needs of the company. It would also attract investors in the company and would create a positive impact on the share prices and market value of the company. All this in a way is a progressive environment for the business to flourish. Ethical behavior also provides an advantage of improving internal communication in the business, because it is important to share significant information with the people associated with the organization. This reflects that the company does undertake philanthropy in its true sense (TOMS, 2016). Corporate Philanthropy should be undertaken with planning and it should align with long term goals of the business, then only it serves the purpose. It should be planned strategically then it would be useful. What is observed in the modern trends is that companies spend big money in the names of philanthropy to promote a brand and not be just to the society. They associate themselves with big brands or sponsor high profile events in the name of philanthropy. But that does not even count on it. The true meaning of philanthropy would be when business would put its resources in a strategically planned manner for the better and development of the society to create a positive impact which would also give it a competitive edge in the market. Aligning long term goals of sustainability with current philanthropy practices is what is required for the business. Uselessly spending money in the names of philanthropy but not using it to get an edge in the business would not be beneficial in the lo ng run. I have chosen to write a feminist analysis of the short story â€Å"Lost boys†. â€Å"Lost boys† is a feminist short story written by Deborah Moggach. A feminist analysis of a text focus on the way men and woman are portrayed and the overall message, which I am going to deal with in this following analysis of â€Å"Lost boys†. The short story â€Å"Lost boys† is about a couple and their relationship to the narrator’s mother-in-law, Lily. The story starts in â€Å"in-medias-res†, which I can see because the reader is thrown straight into the story without any introduction. Lily’s son, Ewan, believes that Lily is an untrustworthy and abnormal mother, but the narrator doesn’t agree in that. Although Ewan has told a lot of bad things about his mother, the narrator believes that her mother-in-law, Lily, is a romantic and good woman. Ewan thinks he had a deprived childhood because he doesn’t feel that Lily took care of him. The narrator went out for a swim while Lily looked after the children, but when the narrator went back, Alex was gone. Lily is a selfish woman who doesn’t think of anything else than her paintings and that’s the reason why she forgets Alex and Ewan. The narrator never told Ewan about what happened that day. Ewan is the narrator’s husband and the father to their two children, Cassie and Alex. Ewans father died when Ewan was a child and ever since he had been alone with his mother, Lily. Ewan believes that he had a deprived childhood with his mother, because she couldn’t take care of him. The narrator is Ewan’s husband and the mother to their two children, Cassie and Alex. The narrator tells the story in 3rd person, because she is able to empathize with all the characters in the story. In the start of the story, the narrator likes her mother-in-law, but after Lily forgot she when she supposed to look after him, the narrator changes her view of her. Lily was a famous painter and model called â€Å"Lily Frears† and lived in a cluttered mansion flat opposite the British Museum. Lily had been thought two marriages, one to a young sculptor and the other to Ewan’s father, who died of pancreatitis. In her young days she was a beautiful girl with ruddy skin and bold bypsy eyes and it seems like she can’t stand the idea of growing up and getting old, which I can see in the following quote from the text: â€Å"She was always Lily, newer Granny. She wouldn’t let them call her that because she felt the wings of mortality brushing her face; she said this, toutching her rouged check. † (Side 35 – line 26). Lily doesn’t cook dinner by herself so instead of cooking dinner she ate in the sandwich bar downstairs and her fridge was always almost empty, except from her can of Kit-e-Kat and gin. Lily is a bad mother because she can’t take care of her son, Ewan. This short story is a typical feminist story because it describes how a woman doesn’t adapt to the gender norms. A woman should be able to take care of her own children and cook dinner by herself, but Lily doesn’t live up to that. Lily can’t cook dinner or take care of her children and therefore she doesn’t adapt to the gender norms. I think the reason why Lily doesn’t adapt to the gender norms is that there is no man in her life, and therefore I think Lily behaves like a man instead of a woman. In the gender norms it supposed to be the mother who takes most care of the children and that’s the reason why Ewan doesn’t feel that he has a natural mother who takes care of him. I have chosen to put this short story into perspective to the society today because we live in a society with different gender roles. Woman’s supposed to do all the domestic duty and take care of the children whereas men supposed to do all the heavy works. Many people believe that it is wrong to have gender roles; these people are called â€Å"a feminist†. Lily is a feminist because she breaks the gender roles.

The Inventor of Duct Tape During the second world war, U.S. troops in the heat of battle had a strangely impractical way of reloading their weapons. Cartridges used for grenade launchers was one example. Boxed, sealed with wax and taped over to protect them moisture, soldiers would need to pull on a tab to peel off the paper tape and break the seal. Sure, it worked... except when it didnt, soldiers were left scrambling to pry the boxes open. The Story of Vesta Stoudt Vesta Stoudt had been working at factory packing and inspecting these cartridges when she got to thinking that there had to be a better way. She also happened to be a mother of two sons serving in the Navy and was particularly perturbed that their lives and countless others were left to such chance. Concerned for the welfare of sons, she discussed with her supervisors an idea she had to fabricate a tape made from strong, water-resistant cloth. And when nothing came of her efforts, she penned a letter to then-President Franklin Roosevelt detailing her proposal (which included a hand-sketched diagram) and closing by making a plea to his conscience: We cant let them down by giving them a box of cartridges that takes a minute or two to open, enabling the enemy to take lives that might be saved had the box been taped with strong tape that can be opened in a split second. Please, Mr. President, do something about this at once; not tomorrow or soon, but now. Oddly enough, Roosevelt passed Stoudts recommendation on to military officials, and in two weeks time, she received notice that her suggestion is being considered and not too long after was informed that her proposal had been approved. The letter also commended her idea was of exceptional merit. Before long, Johnson Johnson, which specialized in medical supplies, was assigned and developed a sturdy cloth tape with a strong adhesive that would come to be known as â€Å"duck tape,† which garnered the company an Army-Navy E Award, an honor given out as a distinction of excellence in the production of war equipment. While Johnson Johnson was officially credited with the invention of duct tape, it’s a concerned mother who will be remembered as the mother of duct tape.  Ã‚   How Duct Tape Works The initial iteration that Johnson Johnson came up with isn’t much different from the version on the market today. Comprised of a piece of mesh cloth, which gives it tensile strength and rigidity to be torn by hand and waterproof polyethylene (plastic), duct tape is made by feeding the materials into a mixture that forms the rubber-based adhesive. Unlike glue, which forms a bond once the substance hardens, duct tape is a pressure-sensitive adhesive that relies on the degree in which pressure is applied. The stronger the pressure, the stronger the bond, particularly with surfaces that are clean, smooth and hard. Who uses duct tape? Duct tape was a huge hit with soldiers due to its strength, versatility and waterproof properties. Used to make all sorts of repairs from boots to furniture, it’s also a popular fixture in the world of motorsports, where crews use strips to patch up dents. Film crews working on-set have a version called gaffer’s tape, which doesn’t leave a sticky residue. Even NASA Astronauts pack a roll when they go on space missions. Besides repairs, other creative uses for duct tape include strengthening cellular reception on the Apple iPhone 4 and as a form of medical treatment for removing warts called duct tape occlusion therapy, which research hasn’t been proven to be effective. Duct tape or duck tape? In this case, either pronunciation would be correct. According to Johnson Johnson’s website, the original green sticky cloth tape got its name during world war II when soldiers started calling it duck tape for the way liquids seem to roll off like water off a duck’s back. Not long after the war, the company launched a metallic-silver version called duct tape after executives discovered it can also be used to seal heating ducts. Interestingly enough, however, scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory conducted field tests on heating ducts and determined that duct tape was insufficient for sealing leaks or cracks.
